On Friday afternoon we said goodbye to our grandmother, our MAMA.
Not only was Mama a mother to the 3 generations of our family, but she welcomed anyone and everyone we introduced her to with open arms. She was a woman that prided herself in taking care of her family. Growing up I always remember her playing with us and chasing us around the house, and occasionally breaking out into karaoke. She would tell us stories of how when she was younger she would always sing, and was once invited to a radio station to sing live.
Mama was a huge fan of music, and there was never a moment where she wasn’t playing her CDs and dancing. I always remember coming home to find her in the kitchen cooking and dancing, and I even once walked in on her with Chi in her arms dancing tango with him.
Even with my samba costumes, Mama would always be helping me sew and mend them, and would occasionally laugh at how small some of the pieces were. She would pick up my dance fishnets, and as she giggled and covered her mouth would tell me how when she was younger she had similar stockings that she would wear under her dresses, and they were “very sexy”. lol!!!!
She would offer us advice on “how to attract a husband”, like spraying perfume in your brush and passing it through your hair, wearing bright colors, always wearing lip gloss, and having your nails done. We would always laugh with her about this, and she would tell us how it honestly really works, and would occasionally brag to us that that’s how she got our grandpa, and that he proposed to her only after seeing her a few times. So yeah, I guess she truly was an expert in catching a man back in her days.
As we all got older, Mama still made every effort to give us support in everything we did, even if she didn’t fully understand it. For such a small woman she was so strong and mighty, she always wanted to be by our side no matter what.
So that is why in the same way she was with us from the beginning our lives, we were all there by her side until the very end.
We will never forget you Mama. I know that you are finally at peace, and already breaking out into song and dance to La Bamba up in heaven.
Hasta la vista, baby
