Hardev Dhamrait

Obituary of Hardev Singh Dhamrait

Please share a memory of Hardev to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the passing of Sardar Hardev Singh Dhamrait at the age of 67 after a courageous battle and complications from stage 4 esophageal squamous carcinoma cancer. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and loyal friend, with a contagious smile, and positive attitude. He had an ageless spirit and will be remembered as a man full of love, life and laughter. Hardev is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Mohinder Kaur Dhamrait, his children Jagtar (Puncham), Jagdeep, Lakhwinder (Ranjit), and his adoring grandchildren Saharra, Gia, Sanjit, Sanjot and Manjot. He will also be missed by his brother late Ajit Singh (Surinder Kaur), Sohan Singh (late Satya Kaur), and his sister Gurmail Kaur (Sital Singh). Hardev was born in Ladhana Jhikka, Punjab on October 2, 1953. In 1972, at the age of 18 he came to Canada with support from his elder brothers Ajit Singh and Sohan Singh, and his parents late Harbans Singh (late Channan Kaur) for the betterment of his family. Leaving his wife he ventured to a new and foreign country to build a new life. He arrived in Toronto and stayed with friends until he was able to secure a job. He faced many hardships as he established himself. In 1975 he he sponsored his wife and soon after had his two sons and fifteen years later adopted his daughter. He and his wife both worked hard in various general labor jobs to care for their children, sponsor his parents, siblings and help establish his extended family who were still living in India. It gave him great joy to help his family members get married and establish themselves in Canada. To this day, he helped extended family members establish themselves and support them in any way he could. He adored his family, friends, neighbours and the relationships with his work colleagues. Hardev was an amazing soul who would always be singing and humming. Family, friends and neighbours would know when he was near as they would hear his singing voice as he came close. In 2018 at the age of 65, Hardev retired from work where he was a window assembler. He had built friendships with his colleagues and often missed his interactions and would visit his coworkers and continue to attend social functions. Hardev loved spending time in his garden and took pride in the number of vegetables he grew. He would share his vegetables with family and his neighbours. He also enjoyed his tending to his flower beds, lawn and enjoying the interaction with his neighbours. He would go for long daily walks for upwards to 2 or 3 hours, enjoyed cycling and going swimming at the community centre with his friends. Hardev was always the life of the party. He was able to interact and engage with all age groups. His sons, and his sons' friends considered him a friend and ‘one of the boys’ whether having a drink, barbecuing, playing cards or just talking. He enjoyed visiting family and friends, and having family and friends over as much as possible and cherished the time he spent with all. He preferred to tell stories, reminisce and engage in conversation with all. Hardev was also well travelled and would take the time to attend family functions whether in India, England, California and elsewhere. He took every opportunity to laugh and to get together with his loved ones. On March 16, 2021, Hardev was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal squamous carcinoma cancer. His will, strength, and perseverance shone through this difficult time. He had a strong fighting spirit and positive attitude to the end. He was a wonderful human being who loved to give and blessing to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Oct 2, 1953 to May 24, 2021. Forever in our Hearts. Rest In Peace.
