Lakraji, better known as Basmati, or Dee Bas, was born at 124 D’Andrade Street, Newtown, Georgetown, Guyana. She was born to Ramasray and Somaria Ramasray on June 14, 1934. She attended school at St. Winefride’s Roman Catholic School on Garnett Street, Newtown. She married Bhola on September 25, 1955, by Hindu rites in Newtown. Before marriage, Lakraji worked at G. Kawall’s Ltd. on Regent Street, Georgetown. After marriage, she ran the family business at 9 La Penitence, East Bank Demerara, Guyana, before returning to Newtown to live at E 1/2 119 Da Silva Street. During her time in Guyana, she was an active partner with her husband in the family business that they established in the 1970s. In her formative years, she taught Hindi, and in her later years, she served in the leadership at several volunteer organizations, including Hindu temples and educational associations. She also cared and advocated for the many elderly members of her community in Newtown, Guyana.
