Alicia, my cousin and close friend, came into this world just months after I did. We were very close growing up, always excited for the weekends and school breaks when our family would get together, and we could hang out. We spent many days together at each other’s homes, swimming and playing at our Nani and Nana’s condo. The nights often ended with us begging our parents to let us have a sleepover because we didn’t want to say goodbye.
We were fortunate to begin our university journey together in Waterloo. It was our first experience living away from home, but having Alicia just a short walk away was a blessing. We frequently visited each other's dorms, introduced our new friends to one another, and ventured to our first university house parties together. Both pursuing Science majors, we often bonded over our shared struggles of calculus and organic chemistry.
When we both turned 19, we would go to the clubs together and dance the night away. She was an amazing dance partner and always had the best moves and biggest smile on her face.
Whenever I felt homesick, I found comfort in her company. She was always there to go on walks, or to let me hangout with her and Yvonne when I was feeling lonely. One of my favorite things to do was when the three of us would sit around her table in their living room, working on a puzzle for hours on end. Alicia’s laugh was so infectious, and seeing her eyes light up when she found the puzzle piece she was looking for was priceless.
When COVID hit, Alicia and Yvonne became part of my “bubble” in Waterloo. We welcomed each other into our apartments, cooked for each other, watching shows, and cuddling on snowy winter days. I was always happy to go to her home and see her plant collection growing. My love for plants grew from her during school.
It was difficult when Alicia moved to Manitoba during my last year of university. We kept in touch with frequent facetimes and I was so happy to hear about her flight school and the many new adventures she experienced while living in a new province. I was so excited when she started dating Jurgen, she was happy and I know he loved her deeply. Jurgen, Alicia, my boyfriend Ryan and I would play Nintendo Switch games together over Facetime – they made such a good team always beat us in 2 vs 2 games like Overcooked.
The love that Alicia showed me and the incredible people I met through her will always hold a special place in my heart. The memories we created together, the fun we had, the tears we cried and the love we shared will forever be cherished. I love you, Alicia, and I will miss you so much.

Dearest Anita, Keith, Jasmine, and Jurgen
I cannot express how saddened I am at Alicia's passing. I only saw her every few years but in that time I saw her go from being a shy little girl (who followed her big sister around) to a beautiful young woman with a radiant smile. I feel so blessed to have spent time with her just before she passed and get to know her as the amazing adult she had become. What I loved about Alicia is that when you talked to her she gave you her full attention, she made you feel like you were the only person in the room. I remember her meeting up with us in downtown recently and she told me that she overheard an elderly couple on the bus talking about how they were lost, Alicia told them she would stay with them because she was going in the same direction. That summed up Alicia, kind and generous to everyone. Alicia made the world a better place, and what more could anyone ask for from their lives. I loved little Eli's sentiment when he said "we should be thankful for the time we had with her", that's perfect. It doesn't make sense that she's gone but we can be thankful for the time we had.

Our dear Keith, Anita and Jasmine, Jurgen, Aunty Vilma, Christopher, Brandi, Ava, Eli, Kayla, Kenneth and Richard, there are rare and few moments when words just seem like so much noise and this is one of them. But since we are not there to express our love and shared heart- break at the passing away of our lovely Alicia, please know that we offer you something we believe will help you navigate this storm : Our continued prayers. Watching all the lovely pictures and tributes to Alicia at the memorial, it's so easy to imagine her sitting in Jesus' lap and chatting with Him and smiling and sharing her concern for you all. And Jesus reassuring her that He is carrying you through it all and collecting your every tear.
So please do rest in Him. He created Alicia with love and lent her to you to enrich your world and ours. We did not know it, but she completed her mission and passed with flying colors. She touched hearts. And that is what we all must learn from her.

Alicia D’Souza. I want to make sure you know exactly how extraordinary you are as a human being. You have brought immense happiness into my life in ways that you can’t imagine. In our short time together as one, we loved so hard and true than anyone could ever have. You have shown me how true happiness felt spending with someone I truly love. There was never a dull moment in our relationship. You also shown me how amazing life would be with you in Canada.
Being there for almost your entire flight training, I witnessed a great pilot in making. Your dedication, passion, love and skills for flying have never cease to amaze me. I love all the memories we made flying together, being able to share the joy it brought you, made me so happy. I am glad that I got the chance to accompany you in your journey. You have always been my greatest pillar in life and I want you to know that your dreams are now my dreams. And we are going to get there together as one.
My favourite memory of us was how we met. How crazy it was for us to meet in Steinbach a town so small. I remember us always talking about how we were meant to be and felt that the universe was pushing us to be together. Everything felt like falling in place together perfectly. Your curly puffy black hair and your soul piercing eyes reeled me in. The feeling of home whenever I come home to you sealed the deal for me.
I will always love you. You will always hold a special place in my heart. Losing you feels like a void that will never be filled. Every morning, the first thing that comes to my mind is wishing we had more time. You have no idea how much I am going to miss you. But I want you to remember that I will always be your sweet pea.

We met Alicia a handful of times over the years, the first was at our wedding and most recently only a week before her accident. As soon as we got to Toronto we remember Alicia coming to see us and she was like a whirlwind! We were so lucky to then spend another few days with her and the rest of the family. She made us feel so welcome and she smiled that beautiful smile all the time. I remember telling her that she laughs like her mum. Jack was especially enamoured by Alicia. We were so proud of her achievements and we will all miss her so much.

I had the privilege of getting to know Alicia when I went out to Winnipeg to fly FLUG last year. Starting out as complete strangers, Alicia picked me up from the airport and we went to Lyncrest for a hands on ELT installation session. We shared several flights together that week, and thanks to Alicia, I quickly learned the area. Her passion and determination shone through our flights together.

Remembering you, my sweet niece Alicia. The first picture was taken on one of your visits to my house on Seaton St. I was changing you into your pajamas. You reached up and held my face in your hands and said, “Uncle Ken, I love you.’ My heart melted. I couldn’t have loved you more if you were my own child. That was you, always making us feel seen, loved, and special. The second picture was taken in your dad’s backyard by Uncle Richard. It just captures the essence of you and you look so beautiful and happy. I am so sad that you are gone but I will console myself with all of the happy memories, knowing you were doing something you were passionate about, and that you had found love with such a great guy. I will see you in the eyes of your parents, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and your soulmate, Jurgen. I know you will be watching over and protecting us. Alicia, if I could tell you one thing, it would be that I wish we could have had more time together! I remember the time when the whole family went to Gananoque and Thousand Islands during Covid. We each had a room at the Ramada by Wyndham. There were about 8 families and we had the most memorable, fun times together. We were in and out of each others rooms, playing board games, drinking, swimming in the pool and soaking up the sun at the beach.
Alicia, you will be dearly missed but will be forever in our hearts.

Alicia always had a twinkle in her eye. When we first met I thought she was shy but soon she would be one CNN of the dancing queens in the living room and showed off her ability to climb up the doorframe. We were so lucky to be in a tight knit community that shared birthdays, bbqs and fireworks. Our Disney trip was amazing and the family is forever in our hearts.

Happy, insightful, gentle, tough, very loving…. my niece. Watching you grow into a strong and gentle woman has been a joy. I’m sad.
I met with Alicia one on one about a year and a half ago for breakfast and hiking. She told me she was in pilot training, doing well with her training. She spoke of Jurgen, beaming with happiness. Then she said “Masi, how are you doing? How’s it going with Uncle Todd, and the boys? “
Living in California, I don’t see and talk to Alicia all the time. This moment was pivotal. I knew my niece grew up. She lived a full life! She loved and was loved enormously!
